How to Celebrate Pride with Your Kids
June is almost here, which means it’s time to break out the rainbows and celebrate Pride Month. This is a time to honor and uplift the LGBTQIA+ community, their history, and their incredible contributions to the world. But what exactly is Pride?
Pride Month is celebrated every June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City, a pivotal moment in the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights. Today, Pride is about visibility, self-expression, community, and joy. It’s celebrated by LGBTQ2S+ folks, their families, allies, and anyone who believes in community and love for all.
So how do you celebrate Pride with your kids in a way that’s meaningful, age-appropriate, and fun?
Below are some gentle, joyful, and affirming ways to celebrate Pride with your kiddos:
1. Have a Welcoming Attitude at Home
Kids notice everything. Whether it's the way we talk about others, the books on our shelves, or how we respond to questions about gender and love—your attitude matters. Make your home a space where all identities are seen and respected. You don’t have to be an expert, just open, curious, and loving.

2. Post on Social Media
Visibility matters. Sharing why you and your family celebrate Pride can inspire others and show your support publicly! Whether it’s a rainbow craft your kids made, a favorite children’s book, or a message of allyship, posting helps normalize love in all its forms, just make sure you check with your family member before posting it first!
3. Find a Local Pride Event
Check out family-friendly Pride events in your area!
In our area, Bozeman Pride and Big Sky Out are awesome events packed with community, creativity, and fun. They offer kid-friendly events that welcome families of all kinds. It’s a great opportunity to show your kids the power of togetherness and visibility in action. Additionally in Helena is Montana State Pride, featuring a parade and a drag show in August!

4. Share Your Story
Your voice matters! If you're a parent, you can help empower other families. Whether you have LGBTQ2S+ family members or are raising your kids to be thoughtful allies, sharing your story can spark meaningful conversations and help others feel less alone.
Bonus: Be Gentle with Yourself
There’s always more to learn. If you're feeling unsure about how to talk to your kids about Pride, that’s okay! The fact that you're showing up and trying matters. Lead with love, stay curious, and remember that small steps make a big difference.

The Bottom Line: Pride Is Every Day
Celebrating Pride doesn’t have to end on June 30. Whether it’s reading varying books, supporting queer creators, or having open-hearted conversations, Pride can be part of your family’s values all year round.
Because love? That’s always worth celebrating!!
