Is Depression Affecting Your Sex Life?
By Zoe Pyfer
When we think of depression, we often think about feeling sad, unmotivated, or hopeless. But did you know that depression can also affect your sexual health?
Your physical and mental health are more closely connected than you may realize. In fact, changes in sexual health are often one of the signs healthcare providers look for when diagnosing mental health conditions like depression.
While it’s important to talk to a doctor about concerns you have regarding your sexual health, if you’re wondering if depression is affecting your sexual health, here are some common signs and symptoms:
Changes in sex drive - Depression can lead to you not enjoying things that you once enjoyed- including sex- which may lead to a lower sex drive and libido.
Difficulty reaching orgasm - Orgasms are a whole-body experience, relying on both your mental and physical state. This is why you may struggle to reach an orgasm if you are experiencing depression.
Erectile dysfunction - Low self-esteem, anxiety, and guilt are common symptoms of depression and can interfere with the brain’s ability to send signals to trigger the process of an erection, which relies on healthy blood flow, hormone balance, and nerve function.
Pain during sex - Depression and low libido can affect vaginal lubrication, which may lead to discomfort or pain during sex.
Caring for your sexual health when you’re depressed
Managing your sexual health while living with depression can be difficult, but you’re not alone, and support is available. If you’re noticing changes in your sex life, here are a few steps that might help:
Talk to your healthcare provider
They can help you explore treatment options such as therapy, medication, and social support, as well as rule out any other causes that may be contributing to your symptoms.
Get Moving
Exercise is a proven mood-booster and can also improve sexual health by increasing blood flow and energy levels.
Communicate with your partner
Be open about how you’re feeling. It can build intimacy, ease guilt or frustration, and strengthen your connection as you navigate what may be a challenging time together.
And yes- have sex (if you want to)
Maintaining intimacy in a relationship, can sometimes help you feel more connected and supported. That being said, you should never feel pressured. It’s ALWAYS okay to say no, and your comfort and consent come first.
