Common Parent Concerns About Our Puberty Workshops and Sex Ed!
-
All Bridgercare education is values neutral. This means our educators are specifically trained to provide this education in a non-biased manner. Our job is to provide medically accurate and developmentally appropriate information so youth can make the best decisions for themselves. We encourage youth to talk to their families, mentors, faith leaders, etc. if they have questions around values related to sexuality.
Our LiFT workshop (for teens age 13-19 and their supportive adults) aims to foster healthy communication between teens and their families about the tough stuff, including sexual health and healthy relationships. In this workshop, there are sections to work on skill-building to share your values with the young people in your life.

This is normal! All of us have different comfort levels in discussing these topics, especially depending on the experiences and education we received as youth ourselves. That being said, parent -child connectedness (communication, openness, support, etc.) is a "super-protector" for many risky behaviors related to sexual health.
Both our puberty (8-12) and LiFT workshops (13-19) are events you can attend with your youth to learn and communicate together. If you would prefer to dip your toe in the water without your youth present, keep an eye out for our Fall Parent Info Series where we explore topics related to sex-ed and reproductive health in a parent-only setting.

All of our education is developmentally appropriate, designed to meet your youth wherever they may be at both in age and developmental stage. Additionally, youth are already receiving a wide range of information about these topics from their peers, social media, and other sources - most of which is likely not accurate.
We have a variety of public workshops and programs that may be a good fit depending on your youths age and developmental stage: Puberty Workshops for ages 8-12 and their supportive adults, LiFT Workshops for ages 13-19 and their supportive adults, or our independent online learning program, Vision of You, for ages 13-24.
-
All of our education is evidence-based or evidence-informed. This means research has shown that what we teach affects certain outcomes such as reducing teen pregnancy or increasing youth comfortability communicating about sexual health, etc.
If you are concerned about your youth becoming sexually active, our LiFT workshop (ages 13-19 and supportive adults) could be a great fit. In LiFT, youth and parents come together to learn health communication skills that can be applied to a wide range of topics, including sexual health and activity. Our puberty workshops (ages 9-12) are a great opportunity to build the foundation of communication around topics related to sexuality for younger youth.
