Erectile Dysfunction: Your Questions Answered!

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a lot more common than people realize. In fact, it’s something that affects patients of all ages. Because ED is so common, we also hear the same handful of questions! If you have ever wondered about ED, you’re not alone.

What is ED?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the persistent inability to get and/or maintain an erection firm enough for sex.

How common is it?

ED is very common. About 24% of the population experienced ED in 2024. Estimates suggest that 322 million people will experience ED in 2025. You are not alone!

Are you more likely to have ED the older you get?

While ED is more common in people over the age of 40, it still affects people of all ages. Additionally, just because someone is getting older doesn’t mean they should be expecting to experience ED, and younger people can experience it for many reasons, too.

Is ED a sign of something else?

Sometimes. Conditions that affect blood flow to the penis, like high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, or pelvic injuries, can contribute. That’s why an ED visit often includes a gentle health check-in. This may include vitals and labs if needed.

Is ED only psychological?

No! ED can have physical, psychological, or mixed causes. While stress, relationship dynamics, performance anxiety, or mood may play a role, there are a number of physical factors that may cause ED. Things like circulation, nerve health, and diet can absolutely lead to ED. Excessive alcohol and tobacco use as well as a sedentary lifestyle are also common contributing factors!

Does my medication cause ED?

Some medications, like certain antidepressants and blood pressure medications, can contribute to ED. That being said, don’t stop a medication on your own, but do bring your list to your appointment so we can talk through possible adjustments with your prescriber!

Should I see a doctor about ED?

If ED is new, frequent, or bothering you, it’s worth a visit! We will listen and talk through treatment options that meet you where you’re at.
